European Decorative Arts and Sculpture Dresser (Dressoir or Buffet) Made in France, Europec. 1525 Artist/maker unknown, French Oak * Gallery 254, European Art 1500-1850, second floor (Rubenstein Gallery) 1930-1-180 Purchased with Museum funds from the Edmond Foulc Collection, 1930 |
LabelThe form of this dresser continues a late-medieval type. However, the carved decoration juxtaposes two styles: an older taste with linenfold panels (seen on the bottom) and variously decorated columns topped by fanciful but not yet classicized beasts; and a newer, Italianate taste with heads and ornamental panels in the ancient Roman style.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons. Although gallery locations on the website are updated regularly, there is no guarantee that this object will be on display on the day of your visit. |
